As a professional turner, it is a pleasure to be able to share some of my projects with you.
I keep these presentations as short as possible whilst giving as much information as I can in the time available. Not everything can make it into each video though, so they should be treated as a demonstration rather than a lesson, though there is much to be learned from each one, I'm sure. Some of the projects are suitable for beginners, whilst others are more advanced.
Some of the projects include a items that are for sale from my website, such as project instructions or extended versions of the videos with even more information included. Also, the range of finishes I use is made by my business, Hampshire Sheen. So don't be surprised if you hear that name cropping up regularly.

#105: Wide-Rim Airbrushed Piece (Sped-up Live Stream Edit)
Here is an edited version of the Live Stream from 17th December '23.
It is an airbrushed 13/14" popular (tulip) piece decorated with a combination of Intrinsic Colours and Carnival Colours from Hampshire Sheen.(Black, Raven Black, Pear Green, Forest Green, Super Green, Earth, Burnt Orange, Lavender Violet, Mediterranean Blue, Egyptian Blue, Hero Red, Orange Orange.
Finished with Hampshire Sheen Professional Sealer Spray, Cellulose Sanding Sealer and Professional Clear Satin Lacquer.
Turning it was simply a case of using a 3/8" bowl gouge, 1/2" spindle gouge and a point tool.
The rim was sanded from 120 to 1200grit to enable airbrushing without sealer.
For the grass, I used various masking tape...

Having returned to the UK and a heap of work from the US over a week ago, Natalja and I have been working flat out to get it cleared so we can concentrate on moving forward on the run up to the Harrogate Show in November. As I say in the video, we are very grateful to Craig and the team at Wood World of Texas (www.woodworldtx.com) for their hospitality whilst we were with them. They made being ...
#104 Turning a Two Part Sycamore Bowl
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.2 года назад
Having a large lathe, I thought it time to stick a large piece on it for you. I wanted to create a single curve bowl (no foot on it) and a tray type base to sit it onto, with the base being able to be used as well as the counterpart bowl. This video is an edit from a live stream presented on 25th June. You can watch the stream here: ruclips.net/video/7-yN_yetJws/видео.html. The finished sycamor...
TIU E6: Sharpening System - Robert Sorby ProEdge
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 года назад
Sharpening is casually known by some as being a dark art of turning, with many opinions on the best, or most suitable system for woodturning tools. In this episode of 'The Tools I Use and Why I Use Them', I go through why I use the Robert Sorby ProEdge. Included at the end, are links to the bowl gouge video and a live demonstration on the system presented in 2020. Important: This series of vide...
TIU E5: Compressor and Vacuum Chuck System

Episode 5 of the 'Tools I Use and Why I Use Them' series looks at the compressed air and vacuum chuck system we have here in the workshop. Our compressor is a 'silent' Hyundai 50l unit which is superb and provides enough puff for the teaching room, Les' workshop, and mine, too. The vacuum chuck system I use is the one from Holdfast with the 4" and 6" chucks. Important: This series of videos is ...
TIU E4: Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

For this episode of 'The Tools I Use and Why I Use Them', we take at look at the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) I use when turning. In particular, we look at impact protection for eyes (face shield and safety glasses) and face and lung protection, too (respirator and dust mask). You will notice that the faceshield in the background with the yellow headpiece is not mentioned. I removed this...

For episode 3 of this series, we take a look at the bowl gouges that I use, namely 3/8", 1/2" and 1/4" bowl gouges. I explain the angles I use and why I use them . . . there are also some very simple demonstrations on each of the tools in use. Important: This series of videos is neither sponsored nor endorsed by any of the manufacturers mentioned and the tools and equipment I present here have ...

#103 Turning A Wet Oak Crotch
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
Turning wet wood is a joy, and this oak crotch piece (which is a customer commission) was indeed a joy to turn. In the video, I take the piece from a rough cut piece of branch into a super looking bowl using a 1/2" bowl gouge and 3/8" bowl gouge, plus a 3/8" spindle gouge. Wet wood can be troublesome, particularly if there is some spalting creeping in as there was in this piece. During the proc...
TIU E1: Chucks Jaws and Faceplates

In this first episode of 'The Tools I Use and Why I Use Them', we'll be taking a look at the chuck systems that I use, and their jaws. Take a look here at the SuperNova chuck and the Axminster SK114 chuck. There is a separate video for the vacuum chuck system that I use. Remember that as a professional turner, there are tools that may not be necessary for beginners and that multiple chucks are ...

Oh! That drop off was painful to watch. Don't think I would have been so dignified 😂
Is there a way to use the grits when a piece is off the lathe, or does it need to be done at higher speeds on the lathe?
Love this!
Megusta pero tienen que pronunciar las medidas calibradas sonó es imposible okey
Wonderful presentation
Probably one of the best beginners bowl turning video I have seen. Thank you so much. Very inspiring.
Having had some recent problems with my feet I suddenly realised that I needed a foot roller. Then realised I could probably turn one. So I googled it. Guess which video came up first?! How have I never seen this video???
No idea mate! Thanks for watching!
This is very cool. I wonder though if you could have turned the hole for the candle whilst it was ‘inside out’? I ask this because if so, once it’s together the correct way you could have made a small hole under the candle for a magnet to sit in. Then, place another magnet in the base but with the same pole pointing towards the other magnet so that when you put the two pieces together the upper piece has just enough separation and ‘float’ to be able to spin. That would be awesome!
How long is the blank that u turn
Thanks! made a very similar one, but with a tenon on the base to stand on
❤❤❤ ❤❤ ditto everyone's postive comments .Great
Martin what a great bowl, your effort produced a craftsman masterpiece. Hope the lady enjoyed her bowl. Mate I felt for you dropped it but a true perfectionist fixes their errors. Stunning may thanks
I don't know if my method is used by woodturners to remove a tenon instead of using an "adjustable jaws set". I've made a concave cone (and a convexe cone) which can be fitted in a chuck as a driver. I take the finished piece of wood between the cone (with cloth to protect it) and the tailstock with a fine tip. So I can remove almost the whole tenon, the rest is removed easely afterward. It works very well, no vibrations, no risk of ejection of the piece of wood, almost all pieces of wood can be fitted in a cone.
😮 Martin, I have watched you working, I am in awe of your skill and confused. You spray black on some projects and then sand right back - why? Secondly you again use black, when using paints, but you do not sand at all - why?
What made you choose this kind of outside - I think an O G is much more attractive and elegant. Or do you think it is too advanced of begginers. Have a great one! Phil
I would recommend getting used to turn the more simple shapes first and moving the tool in one direction. And Ogee requires a change in body movement to keep the tool presented well throughout the cut. It shouldn't take long at all to get used to simple shapes, the progress from there. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your prompt reply. I did ask you where I can get some DRY wood blanks from (Not Amazon please) for making bowls and small boxes. Maybe my message got lots. Thanks Phil
@@msabansmith I am really enjoying your videos and learing lots. Sorry I think our messages are getting cross in the ether somewhere. Where can i buy DRY wood blanks for maing bowls and small boxes please. Not Amazon - I don't care for their ethos. Thanks - Phil
Thank you.
Love your owl! Following your creative works Wishing you the best. David
I am in the USA. Thought I would say that I enjoy watching your channel.Been watching for a while and your narrative is easy to listen to and not over bearing. Jim's wood shop.
Ciao ...bel lavorò...dove posso trovare quel jig?
Hi Martin. Me again :) Miss me? LOL....what are the dimension of your top? (No pun intended. Thank you.
Did it crack…….?????
Nope. All good.
I get and I am impressed by the texture and colors much like Stewart f But on a green blank? Guessing that you also enjoy what nature will do to your piece Either way Props to you

Great job, you make both watching and listening to you easy to follow and understand. Funny question, can one use car wax when finishing a piece?
Don't know if you are still monitoring your channel, but that was a great video. Thank you for your time. I do have a question, when you get to the point and part the top off, it seems that the "point" would go away...is there enough left to spin effectively?
Yeah, still here. Very busy with other work. Thanks for watching. Yes, there's enough to spin, particularly if you turn the point first (to the right of the piece) and then part off at the top of the handle.
@@msabansmith thank you so much. Again. Great video...I have indeed liked, subscribed and shared :) LOL
Thank you. I do have plans for more videos this year. Time is not my friend with the other side of the business being so busy at the moment. Still, I'll not complaining about being busy!! Lol
Can't find ANY details re where to buy these products. Anywhere.
If you are looking for the bits for the necklace, search for 'jewellery findings' on eBay or Amazon. Thousands will appear. Just found 220,000 results on eBay.
2024...great info, skill. Enjoyed watching Started my first one today. I made the bottom too v shape.
You look so much like Heath Ledger it's crazy
Lol. Thanks, I think!
this vid was so helpful, excellent advice! just perfect for photographing my wooden items using the phone too 👍👍 id never have thought about taking 1.1 pics, always used 16.9 and struggled massively
Have you ever used two light bars (or other light source) to help with shadow control?
All the time, yes
Thank you this really helped but i have a little problem when i take the pictures even though the background is clean,in the photos there are little dirt places, what can i do them to go away? (The background is clear.)
Hi Martin. On your recommendation when we met at Harrogate I have just received my texturing tool and hope to emulate your fantastic piece of work. As always, thank you for sharing 🌞
Beautiful bowl thanks for sharing 😮
Please, some other shops selling this kind of light box? It seems to be discontinued from Amazon? Thank you!
Very useful information and well presented
It looks great.
Best instructional video yet really loved it, as a new turner learned a lot. The problem you had with the live center disappearing into the vase was nicely solved. However I have a question, could you have turned the vase first and then drilled the hole, many thanks.

What is the brand name of the sander
Great an Englishman. No offence to our international brothers, just need local experience for u.k buying.
It's not difficult to find the products mentioned in most countries. And if you don't like English presenters, I am sure there are turners in your country producing videos.
Thanks good stuff.
Time to break away from the canvas! Hahahaha✌🏼👊🏼
I have been wanting to airbrush on a bowl some art work! You beat me to it. Lol Now I absolutely will! Thanks Mark! Cheers dude!
